As I stood in the checkout line of Target today, the group behind me were loudly talking about the new Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner who is on the cover of a handful of magazines for his recent sex change.
“What’s your opinion?” I asked her. Firing up a conversation with random strangers can be quite interesting.
“I think if it makes him happy, he should do it.”
By the way she replied, I could tell she was not willing to hear mine. After a few other aggressive statements, she finally asked me what I thought but I sensed it could turn into a weird Target catfight. It’s funny how “open minded” people want to shut others down. I knew my opinion was not truly welcomed.
“It’s very interesting.” I responded and left it at that, thankful that the cashier was a swift with the transaction and I was on my way.
So here it is, Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner, who has been praised for his transgender surgery, will be winning next month’s Courage Award and has a reality TV show lined up for late July.
So what are my thoughts on this?
Absolutely no hint of judgement whatsoever.
I think he may always be searching. Searching for that “one thing” to satisfy him. If being a gold medal Olympian didn’t fill that hole in his heart, than neither will a sex change.
It’s like getting a different haircut or losing weight after a breakup; A temporary fix to make it hurt less. But making those external changes never makes the pain go away.
What is the root of the issue? Who knows!? Certainly not me, nor am I to be the first to cast the stone. And I know Jesus didn’t crawl up on that bloodthirsty cross to start pointing the finger either.
Something that my pastor said this weekend is that a hungry person seeks to be filled. I believe that until he dukes it out with his Creator, that precious soul of his may always be hungry, filled with things that don’t satisfy. So tonight, I’ll say a prayer for him- that he finds the depth of the riches of His unending grace and that abundant life he longs for and find the peace of God- which is so freely given- because there’s nothing else like it. I hope you will too.
Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” Saint Augustine
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35
